The Hilltoppers promise tough competition, as do the Golden Flashes. Not on the gridiron, with No. 1 Alabama's mightily favored over this weekend's Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, and over the Kent State Golden Flashes on Sept. 24, but on the entertainment front.
When it comes to football at Bryant-Denny Stadium, no one counter-programs a big concert or other event against the biggest show of them all. But the days surrounding home games? That's a different question.

Six years ago, a promoter went bankrupt due to booking a Friday-before-home-game concert at the Bama Theatre, featuring Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, The Stanton Moore Trio with Anders Osborne, Grayson Capps and Shannon McNally. Tickets were just $15, but the show flopped. The promoter had had big success booking such Friday-before-game shows in Oxford, Mississippi; Nashville, Tennessee; Athens, Georgia; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. But Tuscaloosa was his Waterloo.
